Sim-Sim Sandakan's grilled fish market is one of the places most famous here. I always have my lunch in this place and my favorite is Ikan Bakar Baulu or the grilled shad fish. This meal is famous because of its criss-crossing, scaly and chock-full of tiny bones. You need patience for this but its fatty and savouriness, emmm it is irresistible, you have to taste it your own.
There are also fish like grouper, tuna, red-sea-perch, intermediate flounder, whitefin trevally, prawn, octopus and more available to eat. All burn nicely and smoky, a reminder for you, if you want to find a dining table, do not sit adjacent with the fish fire place, otherwise you will get whiff swirling smoke that stick until you get home.
This place is located about 2 km from Sandakan city. You can go here through the Sim-Sim bus service. Its travel interval time for each bus is 30 minutes. You could also use the taxi service for RM6-RM8 rates per travel from the city center. Normally, local visitor use their own car or by car pooling to go to this market.
A bit history over this site, it is the original city base for Sandakan and founded by the European in 1830. At that time, this area occupied by the Sulu people and governed by the Sulu Sultan. Then, it was leased out to a firearm smuggler from Scotland and from there, Sandakan moves to several European hand's property such as the German, the Dutch and the British company. Then, it was ruled by the Japan soldier and finally get its independence in Malaysia under the Sabah state which also known as the land below the wind.
Back to Sim-Sim market, apart from grilled fish and other seafood products, there are also plenty dries goods stall. Vegetables, tuber and sweet potato, and also banana from different kind of shape are also sold here.
In brief, you won't feel a loss when visiting Sim-Sim Grilled Fish Market. The foods are tasty and added with warm cordiality by the stall owner, making this place more special and particularly suitable to visit at any time.
